Find out more by taking a free mini-assessment.The Health Shield Benchmark is a framework that can help you better understand how your organisation compares against best practice wellbeing strategy. The following assessment is based on the Support work area, which is one of nine areas that a total wellbeing Benchmark score is based on.
The nine criteria below are split into Core and Advanced. Core criteria are essential for any workplace, whereas Advanced add value but may not be suitable for all.
Q1: CORE.Does your organisation provide a free point of need support?
For example, do employees have access to a 24/7 employee support line, counselling services or mental health first aiders?
Q2: CORE. Does your organisation have a recognition programme in place?
For example, a bonus scheme, performance awards or regular thanks and praise?
Q3: CORE. Do your organisation’s working arrangements support wellbeing?
For example, equitable working hours and patterns, annual leave entitlement and support for remote/hybrid working?
Q4: ADVANCED. Does your organisation provide free/subsidised digital wellbeing tools?
For example, health apps or mental health website links?
Q5: ADVANCED. Does your organisation provide free/subsidised wellbeing services?
For example, gym membership or complimentary therapies?
Q6: ADVANCED. Does your organisation provide money-saving options?
For example, perks and discounts or cycle to work schemes?
Q7: ADVANCED. Does your organisation offer preventative approaches to reduce health risks?
For example, eye tests or health checks?
Q8: ADVANCED. Does your organisation offer health insurance/cash back services?
For example, health cash plan or PMI?
Q9: Are your organisation’s benefits flexible and employee-led?
For example, employees are consulted on what they want or have flexibility in how they use benefits?

Your score indicates that you are meeting all of the Core criteria in the Support area, which is great. Providing point of need support, recognising good work and offering equitable working conditions all helps to show employees they are valued, boosting engagement and productivity.
The Advanced criteria build on this to create a supportive workplace culture, keeping employees healthy and happy. As part of a full Wellbeing Benchmark audit we would advise on which of the Advanced criteria you should aim for next and set you a target, plus we look at the balance of wellbeing topics covered too.

Your score indicates that you are not yet meeting all of the Core criteria, which is always our first target for any organisation. Meeting these essential elements by providing point of need support, recognising good work and offering equitable working conditions will help to show your employees they are valued, boosting engagement and productivity.
To provide point of need support you could consider an employee assistance programme, mental health first aiders, an open door policy for a trained manager, access to HR support, pathway to occupational health, or sharing info on support services provided by charities.
To recognise and reward good work, this could be as simple as regularly saying thanks and well done, ensuring achievements are recognised in one-on-ones and appraisals, and possibly linking this to pay, bonuses, rewards, or prizes.
Providing the right working environment is important. This goes back to job design, working patterns, providing appropriate pay (such as being a living wage employer) and support for shift/remote workers. Ensuring contracts are in place, being clear on annual leave entitlement and offering fair sickness/family leave arrangements help to support employees to stay well and perform at their best.
It's clear that you understand the importance of prioritising the health and wellness of your employees, and that's a great starting point. Many businesses are now implementing Wellbeing programmes to provide accessible resources for their employees' physical and mental health.
